I'm an avid bowhunter from Colorado, and have always been interested native American artifacts. I am also interested in flint knapping. Where would you recommend that one should start learning? I inheirited my fathers collection of points. Most are on y broken parts, but one is absolutely perfect - a deep purple in color, and nearly 2" long and 1 1/2" wide. I would like to learn more about it. Thanks.

I'm a collector, Paleo points, 20 years, no new points for past 8 years due to prolif of 'modern' artifacts, too difficult to tell apart. Most of my points are collected pre-1937, some weird nonclassic stuff. I've just started rec'ing Tarp dialogues in mail...fascinating. Is there a magazine 'n video source for all this talk? I've tried my hands at bifaces, have obsidian blanks 'n Novaculite 'n Ft Wayne 'n Horn stone, but it was 10 years ago. I'm almost ready to restart. Hawaii's just too darn far way for serious knappers to meet, never mind sharing viewings of eachother's collections. Some say my collection of authentics are to die for. Being pre '37-43, provenance on some points are a real problem. Joseph Murakami Honolulu

Hi Jim, I am not having any more difficulty receiving all of your page now. I would love to get together with you and Dan and do a little chipping. Do you suppose we could talk our favorite Canandian into holding a little knap-in at his knapping workshop? If he doesn't want to you both are invited to come down to my shop but it is a little cruder than Dans. It really has character and it stays pretty warm with the wood stove I have. See Ya - Ken

Jim Great page ... I've been addicted to the thrill of collecting native stone (some bone & metal) pieces for several years. At first I began collecting for what seemed the most altruistic reasons. Being mixed blood I wanted to hold a piece of the old people's life in my ha ds & then to be able to share it with my kids. I was off & running when I was able to buy a bag full of broken points etc at a pow wow held in Lake Placid several years ago. It was such a moving thing to be able to actually hold a piece of stone chipped & beveled into shape by my ancestors so many years ago. The bug had me. Since then Ive met many fine dealers ober the web & locally too. I haunt rock shops & junk shops looking for old stone pieces. Ive always known there were natives here too (in the heart of the Adirondacks) but believed they were few & far between. I had hoped Id find something someday but didn't hold out much hope & figured Id be buying old stones forever. That changed today. I had two boys at our local beach & we decided to amble down to an old dam. The rain was heavy here last night & I noticed a wash out on the beach on the way back from the dam. Now Ive been swimming at this old beach off & onn since I was a boy -- & that as a looong time ago & had only thought of it as the happiest spot in my childhood. I noticed a round stone in the was out. By now I own several good examples of grinding stones both from the east & western cultures. This stone struck me as bein just about right for a grinding stone. I idly picked it up & had this feeling things were not quite the way they seemed. I turned the stone over & on the opposite side was the tell-tale pit made by long hours of grinding grains. I was shaken. Id felt that same pit in so many stones & now I had one that Id found. I cant explain the thrill but Im sure you know what I mean. Your page is excellent & gives me hope that my finding days are just starting. Feel free to write to me & keep up a good page RD

My personal best find so far this year is a nicely use polished celt in very good condition. Thank you so much for sharing your finds with us. There is a fabulous knap-in every y ar at Flint Ridge State Park located about 30 miles east of Columbus,Ohio . This event is held Labor Day Weekend for three days. Very Sincerely, Angela Barth
